Rasolofozafy Hanitra

Hanitra is currently a medical doctor with a specialisation in public health, which is more oriented towards medical anthropology. Since graduating in human medicine and starting her internship in public health, she has always been interested in community work, with the aim of focusing on medical anthropology. Her first experience in qualitative research was in 2013, with a study investigating the acceptability and use of a rapid diagnostic test for malaria in southwest Madagascar, supervised by the National Directorate for the Fight against Malaria. In order to advance in the achievement of becoming a researcher in anthropology in health, she attended a master’s course in social sciences applied in development in 2016. She was then involved in a four-year clinical trial, a mixed-methods approach, a collaboration between the National Leprosy Program, the Fondation Raoul Follereau and the Institute of Tropical Medicine. She was the research assistant responsible for data collection and analysis in the qualitative component of the project. This collaboration brings her to Belgium to attend the Short Course in Qualitative and Mixed Methods in International Health Research. In addition to her research, she also works as a technician for the Leprosy Programme of Madagascar, the unit that coordinates the fight against leprosy in Madagascar.
Hanitra therefore has both experience and access to both the theoretical and operational frameworks of public health. What she appreciates more in her current work is the field work, visiting different districts to support health workers in managing the leprosy programme at their level. Such an opportunity allows one to acknowledge the reality that the poorer the population, the more vulnerable they are to disease. This concept was elaborated in the sessions of the Global Health by the Healthy Paths Programme that Hanitra attended in October 2024 in Göttingen, Germany. Hanitra’s interest would then be to improve access to care for the most vulnerable, with the aim to advance into the SD goals.
